Urban Dare San Francisco - TV Pilot - Sat, Sep 12

Urban Dare San Franciscon begins Saturday, September 12 at Noon at The Ferry Building. We will be taping the race for our TV pilot, so you will have to sign a release for your images to be used in the show.

Race-day check-in will begin at 10:30am and we will be taking registration up to the start of the race. Look for the light blue shirts in the traffic island next to where the streetcar runs. Proceeds from the race will go towards the fight against breast cancer.

This will be a two stage race. You will get clues for 6 checkpoints at the start, and then you will get the next set of 6 clues at the finish of stage 1. In each stage it is up to you to determine the best order to complete the clues, but the finish checkpoint at the end of stage 2 should be your last stop.

For those of you who want to get the ball rolling early, on Friday evening we will have what we are calling a casting call party at the Fly Bar at 1085 Sutter St (@ Larkin) from 5pm - 9pm. We hope to do some pre-race interviews and get a feel for some of the participants we will be taping the next day. You will be able to check-in for the race here.

Our first place teams from the 2009 series win a 3-day Caribbean Cruise, where they will compete in the first ever Super Dare. Racers will compete on the boat, and at our 2 ports of call. It will be 3 days of fun and games on the last weekend of February 2010. Super Dare winners will receive $5,000.

We now have a family division. I've always allowed kids to race with their parents, but never made an official division. Family divisions can be three or four people and must have one person 16 or under.

This year we are relaxing our rule on having to wear Urban Dare shirts. If you have team costumes/uniforms, you may wear those. Otherwise, you must wear the Urban Dare shirts, which you will receive at check-in. We will have a $50 prize for the best costume.

You should bring a cell phone and a digital camera to show your pictures at the end of the race. A cell phone camera will work. Maps are also handy and you should have someone to call to help look up clues. I also recommend a pen or pencil to take notes.

Urban Dare, www.urbandare.com, is the race where smarts can beat speed. Teams of 2 solve clues to find checkpoints where they must take photos or perform dares.

Once you are out of the starting blocks, you will pick up your clue sheets and be on your way. You can call friends as much as you want for help on clues. For the checkpoints that mention a dare, you must check in with the Urban Dare official, accomplish your task, and get your passport stamped before moving on. On checkpoints that mention a photo, you must get a photo with both team members to show you were both there.

This is a team race. You must be together throughout the race. You may walk, run or use public transportation to get to checkpoints.

At checkpoints with dares, you must accomplish a task and get your passport stamped to move on to the next checkpoint. Dares range from throwing a bulls-eye, doing a climbing wall, completing a puzzle or eating something (things people like, not bugs).

We expect the winners will finish the race in about 2 hours and most of you will finish under 4 hours. We are working to provide a fun-filled day for you, while providing some good challenges.

See you at the race.

Urban Dare Newport Beach

Thank you to evereyone who participated in Urban Dare Newport Beach.

Congratulations to Sylvia Salcedo & Charlaine McKenzie who won with a time of 1:48:55. We now have 17 teams that have won the Super Dare cruise.

Second place went to Lindsey Denison & Tristen Ure of freckled.

Third place honors go to Junk Monster 1. The team of Junk Monster 2 came in fourth place overall and was the first family team to cross the line. They were known by the racers as the people with the purple hair. Well done.

The bonus question proved to be the most elusive, with only two teams finding it. I was originally going to include it as one of the mandatory checkpoints, but even I couldn't figure out how to find it on the net. Over by the Cannery, where the bridge crosses onto Lido Park Drive is where you will find this memorial.

Next year we will do Urban Dare Long Beach.

Here are the top 5 teams of Urban Dare Newport Beach:

Urban Dare NY

Thank you to everyone who participated in Urban Dare New York.

Congratulations to Bill Benton & Beau Benton who came in first with a time of 1:56:17. Last years winners, Gregg Plonisch & Lester Santos, finished second, and James Olearchik & Jill Ayers took third place honors.

Usually I just list the top 5 finishers, but for this race I'm doing the top 7. Teams Mandate and Sweetpea were the third and fourth teams into the finish, but they had only completed one half of the double jeopardy dare. It would have been easy to call it a day, but they both went back and completed their dare. They earned their listing.

Here is the clue that stymied them: DOUBLE JEOPARDY – First, go to the park named for the triangle below Canal St. for your spellbound dare. Then, in January we will do the first ever Urban Dare Underground here in NY, a race where you do not have to go outside. Here’s your first taste. Get your picture with the art installation A Gathering. It’s at a nearby subway stop.

We'll be back in January for our first ever NY Underground. It will be an Urban Dare where you will never have to go outside. We will utilize the subway and the many buildings it brings you into without going outdoors. This will be the last qualifying race for Super Dare.

Here are the top 7 teams for Urban Dare New York:

1:56:17 - Bill Benton & Beau Benton - Rum Runners
2:08:53 - Gregg Plonisch & Lester Santos - Judge Smails & Dr. Beeper
2:35:05 - James Olearchik & Jill Ayers - Pretty Ponies
2:41:58 - Peter Senftleben & Troy Miller - Multiple Sarcasms
2:42:30 - Jeanne Reynolds & Sabrina Gomez - Hola Kitty
2:43:38 - George Mancheril & Dominick Sciame - ManDate
2:44:00 - Shuang Guo & Karim Helmy - Sweetpea

Urban Dare Pittsburgh

Thank you to everyone who participated in Urban Dare Pittsburgh.

Andrew Moss & Michelle Yanefski were the first one's in to the finish. As we were getting ready to check their photos we glanced at their passport and told them they were missing a stamp from one of the dares. Fortunately for them, it was the closest checkpoint to the finish. They went back out, completed their dare, and still came back before everyone else. Congratulations on a fine race.

Amy & Katie Jones came in second and third place honors went to Adam Myers & Julie Sfanos.

The 3 French Hens were winners of the family division, and fourth place over all. Right on their heels were the 2 Turtle Doves. The other 10 days of Christmas failed to enter the race.

When I was setting up the race, I figured I would have racers get a picture of 6 people in Steelers garb for a 5 minute bonus. Then I heard on the radio that they were doing fan appreciation at Heinz Stadium on race day. I already had one checkpoint across the street, so I changed this to a 15 minute bonus for getting 11 people in Steelers garb lined up like they were ready to take the snap. Most teams got this pic. Nice!

I'm looking forward to coming back next year.

Here are the top 5 finishers:

1:43:02 - Andrew Moss & Michelle Yanefski - obregon
1:49:29 - Amy Jones & Katie Jones - The Jones Girls
1:51:50 - Adam Myers & Julie Sfanos - Sam Young for Mayor
2:04:13 - Cathy Bruno, Stacy Bruno & Clio Begnal - 3 French Hens
2:04:36 - Shelley Bruno & Thomas Humphries - Two Turtle Doves

Urban Dare DC - Sat, Apr 18

Urban Dare DC begins Saturday April 18 at Noon. The race will begin and end at McFaddens at 2401 Pennsylvania Ave NW. Check-in will begin at 11:00am and will be taking registration up to the start of the race. Proceed from the race will go towards the fight against breast cancer.

This year we are relaxing our rule on having to wear Urban Dare shirts. If you have team costumes/uniforms, you may wear those. Otherwise, you must wear the Urban Dare shirts, which you will receive at check-in. There will also be a $50 prize for the best photo from the race.

Urban Dare Phoenix Winners

Thank you to everyone who participated in Urban Dare Phoenix.

Congratulations to Denton Taylor & Sam Sprague for winning with a time of 2:03:16.

Their winning strategy was to hop on the ligh rail to Central & Thomas to the statue of the code talker. They figured out the rest of the clues on the way, and worked their way back on foot. Well done.

Kristin Herman & Elizabeth Sparks finished second, and third place honors went to April Hull & Gene Day.

At the beginning of the race, I explained that there might be a tricky angle for one of the required photos. I assumed that everyone would get inside the crime lab and need to focus upwards to get a shot of themselves with the chandelier. It turns out the front door is locked on Saturday's. My bad. Fortunately, everyone got this shot. A few teams even managed to get inside.

Urban Dare will be donating 5% of this year's race registration to fight breast cancer. Now that I've started on this fight, I've started to discover how many people I know whose families have been affected by breast cancer. We're happy to do our small part.

We're looking at doing a Fall race in Tucson.

Here are the top 5 finishers of Urban Dare Phoenix:

2:03:16 - Denton Taylor & Sam Sprague
2:13:09 - Kristin Herman & Elizabeth Sparks
2:20:18 - April Hull & Gene Day - The Yellow Ones Don't Stop
2:28:32 - Nicole Moest & Lexi Moest - Youth Has No Age." Picasso"
2:35:33 - kirk christiano & Jim Garman - There's no I" in Beer"

Urban Dare Austin Report

Thank you to everyone who came out today for Urban Dare Austin. It was a beautiful day and we blended nicely into the madness of SXSW.

I am calmly sitting at a table at the finish and in comes someone yelling, "Kevin, do I need a photo of the egg? DO I NEED A PHOTO OF THE EGG??? DO I NEED A PHOTO OF THE EGG????? On about his sixth utterance, I figured out what he was asking, and I said yes. Kip Fiebig then took a photo and handed in his passport to finish with the winning time of 1:26:21 along with his teammate David Bogle. This is Kips third first place finish, out of 3 total, in Austin.

Second place went to Jason Mittman and his father Michale Koranek, who finished 2 minutes behind. Sorry guys, you don't qualify for the family division. This is Jason's first second place finish in Austin. His other 2, he ran with Kip.

I want to thank Irene Rivers who selected most of today's checkpoints. She lets me write the clues. I think we will come back sometime in the Fall for Urban Dare on bicycles. This will be our first bicycle dare.

Urban Dare will be donating 5% of this year's race registration to fight breast cancer. Now that I've started on this fight, I've started to discover how many people I know whose families have been affected by breast cancer. We're happy to do our small part.

Thank you all.

Here are the top 5 finishers of Urban Dare Austin:

1:26:21 AM - Kipley Fiebig & David Bogle - Vignette-KD
1:28:34 AM - Jason Mittman & Michale Koranek

Urban Dare Austin - Saturday, March 21

Urban Dare Austin begins Saturday, March 21 at Noon. The race will begin and end at Mother Egans Irish Pub, at 715 W 6th Street. Check-in will begin at 11:00am and will be taking registration up to the start of the race.

Proceeds from the race will go towards the fight against breast cancer.

This will be our first race with a family division. I've always allowed kids to race with their parents, but never made an official division. Family divisions can be three or four people and must have one person 16 or under.

We will host 5 events in Texas this year, so we will have a series champion. We will take your 3 best finishes for champion points. The winning pair will get Urban Dare belt buckles. I've always been jealous of belt buckles from rodeos, so we are creating them for the Texas series.

We are relaxing our rule on having to wear Urban Dare shirts. If you have team costumes/uniforms, you may wear those. Otherwise, you must wear the Urban Dare shirts, which you will receive at check-in. There will also be a $50 prize for the best photo from the race. See you at the race.

Urban Dare Coral Gables - Top 5 finishers

Thank you to everyone who participated in Urban Dare Coral Gables.

Congratulations to Lynn and Karen Davis of Dead Last who, contrary to their team name, finished in first place. They got their team name by where they finished last year's race that started and ended in Coconut Grove. One of the last year's checkpoints was Domino Park. I had intended for racers to go to Domino Park just a few blocks from the heart of the Grove, but Lynn and Karen went all the way to Domino Park in Little Havana. Before the start of today's race, I told the racers that sometimes there is more than 1 correct answer and that they should travel no more than 3 miles from the start. It's great to see a team go from last to first place. Well done!

Here are the top 5 finishers:

3:00:27 - Lynn Davis & Karen Davis - Dead Last
3:17:39 - Sharon Barkwill & Lisbeth Colon - ForSci Chicks
3:56:13 - Valerie Fender & Nick Boyce - Sobe
4:20:13 - William Thomson & Pamela Onorati - Happy Hour

Congratulations to JK & James Lundberg of Team Animal who won with a time 1:25:33, a whopping 40 minutes ahead of the next team. Second place honors go to Joshua Tehee & Travis Sheridan, and Terri & Rich Mejorado took third place.

Believe it or not, a couple teams decided to go all the way to Belmont Park to get a picture with Bill Vukovich's grave marker. Sometimes there is more than one correct answer, but you don't get any bonuses for the extra miles.

We'll be back next year.

Urban Dare San Diego

Thank you to everyone who made Urban Dare San Diego a big success.

Congratulations to Jonna & Rachael Griggs who won our first race in Pacific Beach with an impressive time of 1:36:27. They were followed by Peter Lombard & Kelly Wilson.

Kudos to 11 year old Emma Hobscheid who, along with her mother, was the youngest contestant to successfully negotiate her way through all the checkpoints.

The only thing people seemed to have a hard time with was the 5:00 minute bonus for getting your picture with an authentic stagecoach. This was located on the corner of Ingraham & Taylor. Most racers passed right by it, but only about 20% noticed it.

We anticipate filming a pilot show here in San Diego next Spring.

Here are the top five finishers:

1:36:27 - Jonna Griggs & Rachael Griggs

Urban Dare Santa Monica - Top 3 Teams

Thank you to everyone who came out to make Urban Dare Santa Monica a great success.

Pictured above are Urban Dare Champions Richard Ward & Peter Kyriacou of the Throckies, and our 3rd place team of Stephanie Pollok and Hannah Levin. Mindi Hertzog and Scott Howard of the Pirates of Santa Monica took second place honors.

Our new champs took third place last year. They told me they were pissed to come into the finish and see some racers already drinking beer. This time they were the ones hoisting a few as the other racers streamed in.

Here is the clue for which I saw widest variety of photos: "This is where someone with a foot fetish, who has lived a very good life, goes when they die." There were a few pictures of shoe stores, a picture of a cemetery, and one team saw on a blog that someone said the Santa Monica steps were heaven for someone with a foot fetish. Most racers came back with a photo of Toe Heaven, conveniently located a block and a half from the finish.

Here are the top 5 finishers of Urban Dare Santa Monica:

1:46:10 AM - Richard Ward & Peter Kyriacou - Throckies
2:15:55 AM - Mindi Hertzog & Scott Howard - The Pirates of Santa Marina
2:24:19 AM - Stephanie Pollok & Hannah Levin - 2Legit2Quit
2:26:39 AM - Myles Nye & Price Peterson - Weak Nights
2:28:35 AM - Rich Hebert & Joel Hebert

Urban Dare Seattle - Saturday, Aug 9

Urban Dare Seattle begins Saturday, August 9 at Noon at J & M Cafe at 201 1st St S. We will begin check-in at 11:30am. We also end at the J & M Cafe.

You must wear your Urban Dare shirts throughout the race, which we will give you at check-in. You should bring a cell phone and a digital camera to show your pictures at the end of the race. A cell phone camera will work. Maps are also handy and you should have someone to call to help look up clues. I also recommend a pen or pencil to take notes.

Urban Dare Helena - Top 5 Finishers

Thank you to everyone who came out for the first ever Urban Dare Helena.

Congratulations to Valerie Pallister & Dave Burningham of Team UPS who finished with an impressive time of 1:42:35. Andy Verbanac & Melanie Dayton finished second and third place honors went to Michael Miller & Amber McClure.

I always enjoy finding landmarks that people pass by every day, but have no idea what they are. My sister Erin (the reason Urban Dare came to Helena) reports that she was in Hill Park twenty feet away from the fountain, which is the northernmost memorial to confederate soldiers. She asked several people if they knew where the memorial was and nobody could tell her. She gave up and moved on to other checkpoints, before she backtracked to get her picture with this fountain.

Here are the top 5 finishers of Urban Dare Helena:

Valerie Pallister & Dave Burningham – Team UPS
Andy Verbanac & Melanie Dayton – Urine Trouble
Michael Miller & Amber McClure – Go backoff in your own jackyard
Aspen Incashola & Erin Stephen – MFB’s
Natalie Gibson & Alex O’Dell – The Triple Threat

Urban Dare Denver Top 5 Finishers

Thank you to everyone who made our first Urban Dare Denver a success.

Congratulations to Christopher Baker & Ryan Ruddell of Herb & Heir for winning in an impressive time of 1:37:06. Second place went to Erica & Jeff Jorgensen, and Sasheen Foronda & Brian Sheer came in third.

The stumper clue of the day was getting your picture with the 9/11 memorial. I think the problem in finding it is that there are too many hits under 9/11 when you search. There is a 9/11 memorial prominently placed on the corner of Washington and 13th Street that looks like a 10' tall red aids awareness ribbon. It is also marked on some of the downtown maps. In the firefighters museum there is a 9/11 memorial with a piece of the fallen World Trade Center with a plaque and other items around it. I also ended up accepting pictures of people with the Denver World Trade Center.

Urban Dare Nashville - Top 5 Finishers

The first ever Urban Dare Nashville was a lot of fun. Thank you to everyone who played a part in making it a success.

Congratulations to Heather Lopez & Robert Kurtts for winning in an impressive time of 1:54:21. Second place went to Brian Covington & Amy Moore of Thirteam, and third place honors to Mark Kappelman & Kelly Fork of Team Airborne.

I got various pictures for the Willie Nelson mural. Most of them were from the mural inside the Stage, which features 5 or 6 artists. Some were from the guitar in front of legends, which really isn't a mural. I was looking for the mural off of 3rd Street by the Hampton Hotel, which is dedicated to just Willie. That's why I always say that sometimes there is more than one correct answer.

We plan on making this an annual event in Nashville and look forward to growing this race.

Here are the results of Urban Dare Nashville:

1:54:21 - Heather Lopez & Robert Kurtts
1:57:59 - Brian Covington & Amy Moore - Thirteam
1:59:21 - Mark Kappelman & Kelly Fork - Team Airborne
2:03:24 - Emily Volman & Emily Volman Erin Parker - American Midols
2:07:16 - Melanie Northern & Brandi Holland - Blue Hosses
